How to Gamble Safely

The single most effective harm-prevention strategy is to set limits before you ever start playing. Every casino on this site offers in-account tools you can use to control your spending. We strongly recommend setting these immediately after registration — before your first deposit.

1. Set a deposit limit

Daily, weekly and monthly caps on how much you can deposit. Set it to an amount you would be comfortable losing in full. You can always lower the limit but raising it usually requires a 24-hour cooling-off period — that's a feature, not a bug.

2. Set a loss limit

Separate from deposit limit — caps your net loss across a period. Once you hit it, you can't lose more. Some casinos require you to fund a new deposit to continue play; others restrict play entirely.

3. Set a session-time reminder

Interruptive pop-up every 30, 60 or 90 minutes showing elapsed session time and current P&L. Genuinely effective at breaking play-state and prompting a stop-or-continue decision.

4. Use a reality check

Similar to session-time reminder but with a forced decision point — you must explicitly click "continue" to keep playing.

5. Self-exclusion

The strongest tool available. Closes your account for a chosen period (24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, 6 months, 12 months or permanent). Once activated, customer support cannot reverse it during the chosen period. Use it the moment you feel tilt or recognise problem play.

If You're Worried About Your Own Gambling

Recognising the warning signs is the first step. You may have a gambling problem if you:

  • Bet more than you can afford to lose
  • Increase bet sizes to win back losses
  • Borrow money or sell things to gamble
  • Lie to family about how much you gamble
  • Skip work, study or social activities to gamble
  • Feel restless or irritable when you can't gamble
  • Have tried to cut back unsuccessfully
  • Feel hopeless, anxious or depressed about your gambling

If two or more of these apply to you, please reach out for help. Gambling addiction is a recognised health condition with effective treatment options. The earlier you seek help, the easier it is to recover.

What to do right now: Self-exclude from every casino you have an active account at (it takes 5 minutes per casino). Install Gamban or BetBlocker to block gambling sites at the device level. Then call 0800 654 655.

Site-Blocking Tools

Self-exclusion at individual casinos is effective but limited — you can re-register at another casino any time. Site-blocking tools cover the whole gambling internet at the device level.

Gamban

gamban.com · Blocks all known gambling sites and apps on your device. Works on iOS, Android, Windows, macOS. Once installed and activated, cannot be uninstalled without a cooling-off period (typically 7 days). NZ$3.99/month or NZ$24.99/year. The most comprehensive blocking option.

BetBlocker

betblocker.org · Free non-profit alternative to Gamban. Same device-level blocking, same uninstall delay. Funded by industry levies and donations. Strongly recommended.

Helping Someone Else

If you're worried about someone else's gambling, the NZ Gambling Helpline (0800 654 655) offers free support for family and friends of problem gamblers. You don't need the person you're worried about to call themselves — you can call on their behalf and the helpline will guide you on how to approach the conversation.

Useful starting points

  • Approach with care — gambling addiction is rarely about money, it's about emotion. Lead with concern, not blame.
  • Don't lend money. Don't pay off gambling debts. These prolong the harm.
  • Encourage them to self-exclude and install a site-blocker — these are easy, immediate steps.
  • Connect them to PGF for face-to-face counselling.
  • Look after yourself. The PGF runs counselling for family and friends too — separate from the gambler.

Age Restrictions

You must be 18 or older to gamble at any online casino in New Zealand. Land-based casinos (SkyCity Auckland, SkyCity Hamilton, SkyCity Queenstown, Christchurch Casino, Wharf Casino Queenstown, Dunedin Casino) require you to be 20 or older. All reputable casinos verify age at registration and again at first withdrawal via KYC document upload.

Underage gambling is illegal in NZ. If you are under 18, please do not use online casino sites. If you know an underage person who is gambling, please contact the Department of Internal Affairs or call the Gambling Helpline at 0800 654 655.

Our Editorial Commitment

Every casino we list on this site is required to provide standard responsible gambling tools — deposit limits, loss limits, session limits, reality checks, and self-exclusion. If a casino removes or weakens any of these tools, we remove it from our top 15. Our complete review methodology including responsible gambling weighting is on the how we rate page.
