Online Betting Sites NZ: The Law & TAB Explained (2026)
Since 28 June 2025, the TAB (trading online as betcha) is the only operator legally allowed to take online sports and racing bets from people in New Zealand. This guide explains the offshore betting ban, what it means for Kiwi punters, and how online casino gambling sits under a separate law.
The Legal Position in 2026
There is only one legal answer to "which online betting site can I use in New Zealand": the TAB, which runs its online sports and racing product under the betcha brand. Under the Racing Industry Amendment Act 2025 (in force 28 June 2025), it is unlawful for any operator other than TAB NZ to offer online race or sports betting to people located in New Zealand.
- Legal: Betting with the TAB / betcha — the sole licensed domestic sports and racing bookmaker.
- Not legal to offer here: Offshore sportsbooks can no longer lawfully take bets from, or advertise to, people in NZ. From 1 May 2026, advertising offshore betting to New Zealanders is explicitly prohibited.
- Separate regime: Online casino gambling (pokies, table games) is governed by the Online Casino Gambling Act 2026, not this betting law — see the section below.
Because of this, we no longer list or link to offshore betting operators for the New Zealand sports market. This page is an explainer, not a comparison of unlicensed books.
What "Online Betting Site" Means in NZ
An "online betting site" is any website that takes fixed-odds or pool bets on sport and racing. In New Zealand there is now only one that may legally do this: the TAB, whose online product trades as betcha. The TAB is run under a long-term operating partnership with Entain and is overseen through NZ's racing and gambling legislation, including consumer-protection requirements added by the 2025 reforms.
This is separate from an online casino, which offers pokies, table games and live dealer rather than sports and racing markets. Online casino gambling is being brought under its own licensing regime from December 2026 (covered further down). Betting and casino are two different products under two different laws — this page is about the betting side.
TAB / betcha: The Only Legal Option
Because the TAB holds a statutory monopoly on domestic sports and racing betting, it is the one online betting brand we can point Kiwi punters to. What that means in practice:
- Full NZ consumer protections. Bets are governed by NZ law, with a defined complaints and disputes process and rules on when an operator may limit a bettor.
- Funds stay onshore. No cross-border payment risk and no dealing with offshore regulators such as Curaçao or Anjouan.
- Money recirculated locally. Betting returns are directed back into NZ racing codes and sport, which is a core reason the monopoly was extended online.
The reforms were designed to capture the roughly NZ$180–200 million a year that Kiwis had been wagering with offshore books, and to bring that activity under NZ oversight. From 1 May 2026, advertising offshore betting to New Zealanders is also prohibited. Online casino gambling follows a different path: the Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 creates NZ-licensed casino operators from 1 December 2026 (see our Act 2026 guide) — that Act covers casino gambling only; sports and racing betting stays with the TAB.

NRL (National Rugby League)
NRL is one of the most heavily bet codes in NZ, and the TAB offers deep coverage:
- Match markets: Match winner, line, total points, BTTS, half-time/full-time
- Player props: Anytime tryscorer, first tryscorer, player point totals, player run metres, player tackle counts
- Live in-play: Next try, next score type, momentum markets, cashout available
- Outright: Premiership winner, wooden spoon, top point scorer, top tryscorer
Super Rugby Pacific
All 12 franchises covered — Blues, Chiefs, Hurricanes, Crusaders, Highlanders, Moana Pasifika, Brumbies, Reds, Waratahs, Western Force, Drua, Rebels. Markets mirror NRL coverage. Crusaders' home matches at Christchurch are particularly popular for player-prop betting.
A-League (Football)
Wellington Phoenix coverage is comprehensive at the TAB. Match winner, BTTS, totals, asian handicap, player to score, corners, cards. In-play available across the full 90 minutes.
Cricket — Black Caps
Tests, ODIs, T20Is all covered. Markets include match winner, top batter, top bowler, player runs, player wickets, method of dismissal, fall of next wicket. ICC tournaments (T20 World Cup, ODI World Cup, World Test Championship) get expanded coverage.
Other Kiwi-relevant sports
NBL (Tall Blacks, Breakers), ANZ Premiership netball, motorsport (Bathurst, V8 Supercars NZ rounds), Premier League (always strong NZ following), NFL (Sunday morning NZ time), tennis (ATP/WTA), boxing (Tyson Fury vs anyone, Joe Parker fights).
Betting Features to Understand
1. Fixed odds vs pool (tote)
The TAB offers both fixed-odds betting (your price is locked when you place the bet) and pool/tote betting (your return depends on the final dividend). Fixed odds suit most sports bettors; racing punters often use both.
2. In-play betting
Live markets update during a match — next try, next score, momentum lines. Availability varies by event and code, with the biggest fixtures (NRL, Super Rugby, Black Caps) carrying the most in-play markets.
3. Cashout
The ability to settle a bet for a partial-win amount before it concludes, letting you lock in a return or cut a loss early on selected markets.
4. Multis and same-game combos
Combine multiple selections into a single bet at longer odds. Same-game combos let you build several markets from one fixture into one wager.
5. Withdrawal speed

A Note on Betting Promotions
NZ law places tight limits on how betting can be promoted, and inducements to bet are restricted. Any offers you see should come from the TAB / betcha and be read alongside their terms and NZ's responsible-gambling rules. Be cautious of "welcome bonus" or "free bet" ads pointing at offshore sportsbooks — those operators cannot lawfully take NZ bets, and from 1 May 2026 advertising them to New Zealanders is prohibited.
