For years, Kiwis could bet with dozens of offshore bookmakers alongside the TAB. The Racing Industry Amendment Act 2025 closed that market to protect funding for New Zealand racing and sport, which is returned to the industry via the TAB. Here is how it unfolded:

• 2024: Government announces plans to restrict offshore betting operators advertising into NZ and to strengthen the TAB's position.
• 28 June 2025: The Racing Industry Amendment Act 2025 comes into force, granting TAB NZ a legal monopoly on online sports and racing betting and prohibiting offshore operators from marketing to New Zealanders.
• Second half of 2025: Offshore bookmakers begin withdrawing NZ-facing advertising; questions such as "Is Bet365 closing in NZ?" spike in search.
• 1 May 2026: Advertising by unlicensed offshore betting platforms becomes illegal in New Zealand — a further tightening of the 2025 Act's marketing prohibition.
• Mid-2026: The TAB is the established, licensed home for online betting in New Zealand. Enforcement measures — including potential geo-blocking and payment restrictions on non-compliant offshore sites — continue to tighten.

Note: this betting regime is separate from the Online Casino Gambling Act 2026, which licenses online casino gambling from 1 December 2026. Casino and sports betting are regulated under different laws.

• The TAB is now your legal home for betting. All racing and major sports markets are available through the TAB and its betcha brand.
