Pedigree-bred Texel sheep from a working Canterbury farm with over four generations of expertise
Murray Downs Farm has been in the same family for over four generations and is currently owned and operated by Sarah Rodie and her family. The farm operates across nearly 650 hectares as a pedigree breeding and finishing farm for Texel Sheep and Murray Grey Cattle.
Our Texel sheep are known for their exceptional meat quality, muscling, and lean carcase attributes. The breed originates from the island of Texel in the Netherlands and has proven an outstanding performer in New Zealand's Canterbury conditions.
We also have Red Deer on site for venison production. Our pedigree flock is registered with the NZ Sheep Breeders Association, and we pride ourselves on producing animals of the highest genetic merit.
Enquire About SheepThe Texel is renowned for producing lean, well-muscled carcases with a high meat-to-bone ratio. Their meat is highly sought after by butchers and restaurants throughout New Zealand for its flavour and consistency.
Texels thrive in Canterbury's conditions โ robust constitution, strong feet, and excellent maternal instincts. Ewes are known for high milk production and good mothering ability, contributing to strong lamb survival rates.
Texel rams are widely used in crossbreeding programmes to improve carcase quality across many breeds. Their dominant muscling and carcase traits are passed on effectively, making them a popular choice for commercial operators throughout New Zealand.
Murray Downs Farm is proud to be associated with the leading livestock organisations in New Zealand, ensuring our animals meet the highest standards of breed integrity and performance.
